I think it's a combination of both. Hard work will get you noticed though and that can set you up for better things.

I work at a law firm now and I just happened to pick the best attorney that I could have worked for in that area. He has lots of connections and he will make a great reference in the future. If I had applied maybe a month earlier, then he might have not had a position available. So, yes, luck does play a part in it, but that doesn't mean you should give up and get frustrated by things.

Some people are born more intelligent than others. Some are born with the potential to be great atheletes. We can't choose what we are born with and being born with those attributes can defintely help you out, but you won't get anywhere if you don't work hard.

When I first started school, I slacked off. I had a 2.72 GPA. I decided to get serious and study harder than I ever had in my life. Since 2005, I have a 4.0 GPA. I might not have gotten my job if it hadn't been for my improvement.

Yes, if you work hard sometimes things won't work out for you. But, if you continue on with a positive attitude, then eventually things will work out.

Good and honest hard work breeds success and sets you up for more "luck" to come your way.

Hard work because you can do it over and over again.
Luck doesn't last forever and it happens sporadically.
