We had to.
You were looking at the invasion of Japan, and you knew that they would fight to the death. Easily 1 million US casualties, triple or quadruple that for the Japanese and the war could go on for another three years (owing to the rugged terrain of Japan)
If you had a chance to end it now, wouldn't you? Truman did (although it was also a way to put one over on Stalin)

Simply put they would have never surrendered, they didn't want to surrender after the first bomb which is why we HAD to drop the second. Then even after the second the military wanted to over through the Empire and continue figthing even though it was a sure lose. If we would have never bombed Japan we would have seen an easy 1 million more US and many more Jap deaths from the war...

Japan was defeated, it had no merchant marine, no navy no means of prosecuting the war any further. There was absolutely no reason to Bomb Nagasaki.

Why shouldn't Japan have dropped bombs on Pearl Harbor?
Whats good for the goose is good for the gander. I bet they don't ever try to over reach again because they know they will get their hand lopped off.
