I have vitamin B12 deficiency and have started getting b12 shots from my doctor - I feel better but I would prefer an oral supplement - Does any one know if oral B12 is as effective as the shot?

The shots are the most reliable form. 17-40% of us don't absorb oral B12 properly (17% teenagers up to 40% of us...ah...older people). You can see some improvement with sublingual or under the tongue administration but for a documented deficiency the shots are your best bet.

Another option is Pure Advantage B-12 spray (500mcg Methylcobalamin) you just spray under your tounge. I use it, but I don't know the effectiveness compared to the shot, though. Just another option to consider.

Oral B12 is not absorbed into the body well - therefore is not effective. The best solution is either a vitamin B12 shot/ injection or the B12 Patch - transdermal vitamin b12. The B-12 Patch is highly effective and does not have the same absorption problems as oral b12. You can find more detail at their site http://www.b12patch.com

Oral Vitamin B12 can be effective if you can absorb it well. Most common cause of B12 deficiency is absence of intrinsic factor which is secreted by the digestive system. It is bound with vitamin B12 and only then vitamin B12 can be absorbed.

The B12 shots are the best due to absorption issues. There are pills, sub-lingual tablets, and sprays available but not suggested.
