This problem raised it's head just the other day and I wondered what others experience with it was. I have an 18 yr. old stepdaughter at home who is still in school. She complained about there not being anything to eat. I had a look in the fridge and pantry and there were plenty of groceries. The real problem was that you would have to cook whatever it was. After quizzing her she had been eating fast food for over a week. When asked if she knew how to cook the real answer was no. What happened to the day when girls learned to cook from their mothers. Evidently this is a downward spiral because my wife really dosen't cook or at least dosen't care to
What has happened ? Is there a corporate fast food conspiracy here?

No consipiracy...you just have to have her cook with you... but really that pickiness comes from not eating right as a little kid unfortunatly...perhaps a talk about budgeting might be in order...show her how much food she could buy with the fast food money she spends.
You might want to talk to her and show her about how making food yourself actually tastes better and is fairly easy...and actually makes you lose weight...aren't all teenagers interested in that?

Just because your wife and daughter can't cook don't blame it on the downfall of society. Most people now teach their sons and daughters to cook and for every apprenticeship in even the smallest kitchen there are 100 applications -even though the pay is very low.

The real question is: what are you as a parent doing to prepare your child for when she leaves the house? I know she is your step-daughter but unless you do something fast expect that if she goes away to school she will be calling for money all the time as take out is expensive, and when she is done school she will be moving back in. At LEAST teach her how to budget then she will know what she can spend on food -even if it is only ramen noodles and canned soup.

Now that she's 18 give her a night to cook. like "Monday night spaghetti" and one day you cook your specialty. This gives mom a break and she'll probably be happy to cook for guys knowing she can have a life outside the kitchen as well. the biggest problem I see a the designated cook is trying to figure out what everyone wants and running out of ideas day after day is discouraging and mentally exhausting.Offering suggestions on what to make for dinner is more help than you know.
This could help make a positive example. Instead of that you were born to cook and clean for all of eternity mindset

I absolutely believe that fast food and convenience has taken over our lives. It has become a sad world of convenience. This unfortunately is the leading cause of obesity and a lot of other health problems we have.

I personally cook every night for my family. My two oldest daughters (ages 13 and 10) also take turns cooking. They can cook just about anything I can cook.

I'm in the same boat, twin 18 year olds, and 1 16 year old. None of them are wild about homemade food, although they know how to make everything except Baked Alaska. My son will hardly eat as he worries about gaining weight, but she's in great shape, and the other two are fast food junkies. I keep warning them about cholesterol and heart damage, but they obvioiusly don't listen. I think working parents, lots of demands of school, etc., distract all of us from taking better care of ourselves.

Well I was going to say no young people don't know how to function but you answered your own question later in the paragraph, she cant cook because no one taught her, now you are claiming something is wrong with her because she cant cook???? Its kinda hypocritical .... teach her how to cook and then she'll know, and make it fun or she will hate to cook anyway.

It's not just girls. Boys need to learn how to cook and clean too. My son is 2 1/2 and he loves helping me in the kitchen. When I make cookies I let him stir the butter and sugar together and let him decorate his own cookies, and he loves stiring thing in the pans when I am cooking (you just have to have a long spoon and hold them to keep them safe).

No. they teach languages other than english in primary school and wonder why our kids can read, write or pronounce propper english.
They lack the corpral punnishment we had as kids, and the world wonders why so many kids are going off the rails.
just the other day a friend of mine, admitedly did the wrong thing, it wasn't as bad as that, it was mearly chastisement, but now he is up on assault charges, a thing that was unheard of in my day.
if you want to know why kids can't function any more, it's because of the mamsy pamsy way our current society treats kid's.
BRING BACK CORPRAL PUNNISHMENT AND COMPULSORY ENLISTMENT INTO OUR ARMED FORCES
AND MAKE REAL MEN AND WOMEN OUT OF THEM JUST LIKE IN THE OLD DAYS.

both boys and girls should learn to cook. its a very handy trade to learn. one cannot live on fast food alone. i think we are raising a very spoiled generation.
