My friend and I want to go get a tan for prom but I have a couple questions to ask about tanning salons.
1. About how much does it usually cost per session
2. My friend is over weight and weighs around 250-275, would she be able to fit in the beds? I don't want her to get there and be embarrassed that she can't fit so I thought I would ask before we go.

Sounds like your friend is too big.

Also, tanned skin is damaged skin. No one should go to tanning salons to get too much sun. It's just asking for wrinkles and possibly even skin cancer. Just plain dumb to do nowadays.

If your friend insists on damaging her skin and looking prematurely old, the best thing to do would be for her (or you) to call a salon and simply be honest about her size. That way, they can tell her before she gets there if she will fit.

Do a spray tan instead---no actual skin damage, and she can fit in the booth.

I am about to set out on my own personal vendetta against tanning salons right here on yahoo answers. I used to tan year round (both tanning beds and sun) and ended up with melanoma as a result - at age 32. Now, I caught it way early and only have a nasty 2" scar on my forearm to show for it, but I worry it will return (because melanoma does that). And once it starts spreading, a person may as well make sure their affairs are in order, will written, etc. An appearance of a tan is not healthy - it's a sign your skin has already been damaged.

You can also get other types of skin cancer which while not nearly as bad as melanoma can leave nasty scarring when removed. You also risk premature aging (that's really NOT attractive). And from what I've seen from all these people using tanning beds these days, you'll turn a color not normally found on a human. That's really not attractive either.

If you don't want to listen to my words of wisdom, sorry, but at least I can tell you the above from experience. As far as your friend, yeah, she should be able to (although it would be a might bit claustrophobic). I have no idea what they cost these days since I finally got smart and quit going (but not before the damage was already done).

I suggest that your friend find a salon that has a tanning hut verses a lay down unit, that would be the right wattage for her skin type. The acrylics (what you lye on) do have weight restrictions (most have a limit of 285 lbs, if you are worried about her being embarassed they should not refuse her the stand up) If a client is too heavy it may crack which could cause injury to client and very costly to the salon.

All salons vary in prices, some charge by the minute and some charge by the session. I would suggest calling around before you go, you will be able to tell by service on the phone is staff are going to be friendly or rude!

Hope it all helps, and not too late for you:)
Good Luck and remember not to burn!

I think a Spray Tan would be so much better....I understand you would like a tan for Prom, but I think you will be able to get just as nice a color with a spray-on one. I know some people say they are safe but apart from the skin-cancer worry, I see that my friends who use tanning beds are FAR more wrinkled than my friends who don't! And that's enough to put me off! ;-) At a guess, I think your friend would not fit well in a tanning booth or bed, both styles are pretty small. If you do spray-tanning you could even do it at home, it might be better for her. All the celebs do them, so they do come out pretty well! :) Enjoy Prom!

I know at your age you don't want to hear this, but tanning beds (any tanning, even with the sun) is the worst thing you can do to your skin!
I wish I had taken that advice when I was in my 20's.
Also, when I was growing up, there was no sunscreen, we just played outside all day and got tan.
Then when I hit my early 20's I started tanning, I eventually got to the point where I at least covered my face. Thank God I did that. But now at 42 I have something called Gutate Hypopigmentosa....it is from UV damage, and I have small white dots all over me, that will NOT tan. It is from my melanocytes being damaged from UV.
Take care of your skin.
Now, that being said, when I went it was like $6.00 per session and got cheaper the more sessions you bought.
Also, I have seen women the size of your friend at tanning places, so they must have been able to fit.
Again, my advice is Save your money AND YOUR SKIN!!!!

Price depends solely on the salon so call around and ask what their prices are. Some places have a spring or prom special so you could get a deal. Most places you have a membership fee and then you pay a couple dollars every time you lay, but there are some places where you pay a little more when you lay but theres no membership fee.

As for the beds, if you're calling around for prices and your friend isnt there I would ask about weight limits since some bed are bigger than others. They also have "beds" that you stand up in, that would be an option.

Good Luck!

1. You Cant Buy in sessions, You have to buy minutes or pakages... You also have to be like over 18.. or if you get a parent/ gaurdien to sign a sheet

2.I would go in the stand up one if she isnt that Fat. .... And one thing also You should know that your first time you dont get a tan Just like THAT* you have to work up your tan.. so I would sugest for your friend to get a spray on tan. If you go in the beds or the sun machines.. I would reccomend that you buy a tanning lotion.. A bronzer.. and go in there 5 times and youll work up a small tan

I was the queen of the tan back in the day. Had memberships to the salon, spent my summer "down the shore" -
and I have paid the price aka melanoma.

Save your $ and spray tan.
You can even have someone help apply a nice tan
with gloves - do it a few days before hand to make sure you are even. Save your friend from being ashamed too.

HAVE FUN.

Hey, I just answered all these questions for another young lady, they may be helpful for a first time tanner, and yes, call ahead. Most regular beds probably won't work for your friend, but they may have other options, like a stand up booth, or high pressure bed.

When you tan what do you wear: wear whatever you want, usually people go nude to avoid tanning lines.

Is anybody around watching you: you will be in a private room, so bare it all!

How do you keep from getting bra lines(without going completly nude): Hmmm, you can keep moving it around so different areas are exposed. I would suggest just going without so you can lay back and relax, I think tanning is so relaxing, and having to worry about tan lines while you are in there might ruin it for ya!

Do you have to wear eye things: you should, but honestly, I don't. If you keep your eyes closed they should be ok, but maybe use a light SPF on your eyelids. Burnt eyelids hurt.

How much is it: It depends on what you want and how good of a bed you are using. Typically, the level one beds, or weaker beds (which are good to get a base tan) are cheaper. I can't give you accurate prices because I live in Germany, but call a salon, they can tell you. Now with the regular beds (UVB rays) you have a higher chance of burning. If you opt for a high pressure tan, you generally get tanner quicker, they use UVA rays, so you are less likely to burn, but promote aging. These are typically quite a bit more expensive, but usually worth it. Talk to your local salon, they will usually give you a run down of everything if they are knowledgable.

How do you get in all the creases: Best way I have found is to vary your ways of tanning. One time use a lay down bed, the next use a stand up booth, move around a little bit in there. You know arms up, arms down, legs bent, legs flat, that sort of thing. Also, maybe use a lotion with a bronzer in it to help minimize those lines, or lighter areas.

Age or weight limit/restiction: In the beds with the acrylic covering over the lights yes. It is usually pretty tolerant though. If those won't work for you, try the stand up booths, or sometimes the high pressure beds are pretty heavy duty. Again, ask your tanning specialist. They SHOULD know their beds. If they don't seem to, ask for the owner, or go somewhere else.

What kind of lotion: I suggest using one with a light bronzer. It helps your tan look a little darker, a little quicker. But everyone has their own preference. Some people like the tingly lotions, some like plain stuff with a great smell. The tingly stiff, like most Swedish Beauty products, bring your blood to the surface, which is supposed to help the tan, but you will most likely be super red, I get almost a purple tone after using those so be prepared. Ask the specialist though. they can usually be a good judge by looking at your skin. Starting off, you may want to avoid all the frills until you get a base tan. That is probably what they will suggest. Also, when you are starting out, take it slow. You won't notice a tan that quick, but your skin will thank you, I promise!

Is it embarasing: Not at all. You are in your own room. I would suggest bringing a hand towel or something. Some salons don't have ones for your use. You are likely to sweat, well, maybe not the first few times, due to shorter time in the beds. Also, bring something to put your hair up if necessary. And be sure to clean the bed your self before use. Salon workers do clean them between uses, but play it safe and do it yourself, so you aren't getting someone elses fungus or anything else. Usually they do a good job of keeping things clean, but you never know what happens if they get in a hurry. The only way to be sure is to do it yourself ;)

How to keep from burning: Take it slow. Like I said before, it will take longer to get results, but if you burn you have just wasted all the time and money you already used trying to get that tan. Not to mention the cost of the plastic surgery to get rid of those wrinkles! Hehe, jk.

Tips on getting brown and not red: Once you have a base tan, start with the bronzers too. They will help give you a different tone. Don't get crazy and tan every day in the beginning. Gradual is the key. And apply lotion all over everyday to keep that tan. If you do get a slight burn, do the usual aloe lotion stuff. Get a lotion to specifically help keep your tan, like banana boat, australian gold, or something. Also, some salons will have lotions that help minimize the effects after you have a slight burn. Most salons don't carry it, and I for get the name, but it has all kinds of antioxidants and junk in it. I wish I remembered the name becaust it is a miracle worker.

Hope this helps you all out!

Definately opt for a spray tan, for you and your friend I went to tanning salons for years, until I developed melanoma.
