When you feel impotent in front of a seven year old child , who is asking a logical and valid question, for which you have no intelligent answer despite your age, and you feel frustrated by many pressures due to your "unnatural vocation", then the only solution is reverting to brutality.

In the name of Allaah Most Benefit Most Merciful
All praise be to Allaah the Lord of all worlds
May Allaah's peace and blessing be upon His prophet, his family and companions
I guess it can't be right:
1. even if the child was much older, or even if we would talk about an adult, that's not a way to teach other people about her faith.
''Invite (all) to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious:'' (Qur'an, 14:125)
It looks like all her prayers were meant only for her, and that were only words, not deeds. We must also consider that the human is a social being, which makes what she did, even less justifying
2. we must take care that a child at that age wouldn't never be able to understand anything much about Allah/The God, because children usualy at the age iof 10-11 learn how to think abstractly. In Islam children learn how to perform the salaat at the gae of 7, but their parents only from their 10-11th year teach them to do the salaat regularly. Also, it's highly advicable, that parents take care of the age and mental level of their children, so that they teach them only what they are capable to understand.
''On no soul doth Allaah place a burden greater than it can bear'' Qur'an, 2:286
And all praise be to Allaah the Lord of all worlds
And may Allaah’s blessing be upon His prophet Muhammad, his family and companions

I agree, the nuns and priests back in the day were brutal,
who knows, perhaps sexual repression did it to them,
at least that's what we always used to think --even as little kids in Catholic School.
...and the funny thing is, my mom said that's what the kids used to say back then too..(back in the 40's),
so if even the kids can tell that you are mentally deranged and take your aggression out on the children because you are sexually immature, repressed, uptight and bitter,
you might think there is something to it.
--however, I want to note they don't get away with it anymore so they don't do it, because they can't,
and if you notice, many don't go into that 'vocation' anymore...
maybe it's because they can't get the kiddie beating perks.

At the risk of sounding bellicose, How else is the child going to learn Respect for the Holy Father?
As for condoning the behaviour? I'll drag out that tired old phrase - Tough Love.
Spare the rod, spoil the child.
Obviously, Slap the child, save its soul.
Personally, I think violence directed at children is Immoral and abhorrent, but I guess that makes me some kind of weak liberal type.

That's sad. Poor kid. There's nothing wrong with a kid asking a simple honest question. If I was that kid's mom I'd pull the kid out of church and get that nun fired.

it's not OK! The question is a valid one and one the nun should take pleasure and interest in answering, to help reinforce the child's faith.
If you are alleging this assault happened, you can report it to the education authority.

To physically hurt a child just for asking a question is nothing short of child abuse and harmful indoctrination.
This kind of primitive crap needs to stop.

A small price to pay for saving the child from eternal damnation. "Spare the backhand to the face, spoil the sinful brat"

It is never okay to slap someone, especially a child. If this is true, why are you not reporting it as assault?
