Many european countries use 5 or 6 digit postal codes.
but the phrase 'zip code' generally refers to american postal codes.
if you need an example of a US postal (zip) code, I always use 90210 - beverly hills (a couple of web sites that I have been on require a valid US 'zip code' before they will let you view the site - the parochial b*ggers :-)

ZIP Codes are a US thing, as others have already said moist developed countries use some for of post code
the US uses ZIP codes exclusively numbers
France uses a Cedex number
in both cases the numbers dont have any real significance
the post code used in the UK & Canada has a very specific meaning it ties down an address (or upto 10..20 addresses) to a very specific geographical location
A uk Post Code comprises up to 7 characters in 2 blocks the first block identifies the post town (the major sorting office with upto 2 leading characters, the next the major town or postal town using upto 2 digits)
the second block identifies a postal round and address area
