Retin A is a topical treatment that was originally used to treat bad acne. It tends to cause redness and peeling of the skin when it is first used, but with time the skin gets used to it. It is very important to use sun protection when using retin a as it make the skin much more susceptible to sun damage.
Retin A is also used as an anti ageing treatment as it resurfaces the skin and is said to reduce pigmentation, lines and wrinkles. A version of retin a in various strengths is included in a number of skin care products.
Not sure about the dangers of use during pregnancy as a previous answer states, but I do know there is another acne treatment called Roaccutane (a tablet) that causes terrible birth defects if taken when pregnant.

Retin-a is used to treat acne, mostly. It is also used for anti-aging treatments of the skin and skin pigment disorders. It has really serious side-effects, especially for pregnant women, and should be considered very carefully before use.
