Who says they are keeping a safe distance from us?
There are two ways they work it. Some families have been here for so long they are well woven into society. Indeed many are among the elite and the aristocracy they have been here for so long. Many live in remote places on the planet and lead quiet lives.
Most of them work quietly behind the scenes working to better the world we live in. Scientists, doctors, educators, diplomats, law. Of course they do not show themselves to us. How badly they would be treated! It would undo decades of hard work and contribution to the human race because they would be hounded, possibly arrested and detained, and subjected to the horrors that only "modern science" could pose.
There are several different races of aliens on the planet at this time. After these thousands and thousands of years of visiting, of course some of them remained and have interbred with humans and developed family ties. There have also been a few crashes that have left them stranded here.
There are remote areas where newcomers are acclimatized to life here on earth. There is a definite period of transition of course. At some point, however, these people will "out" themselves and, as expected will most likely be rounded up and sent off to camps. They are easy to identify once their clothing is removed for most have a specific difference according to their race that cannot be hidden.
There is an ancient culture on this planet that has lived among us but never really been of us, who with whom these travellers are very close. Even when you marry into them it is often a long time before you begin to know their secrets, but once you do, the world will never be the same. By then you love them as deeply as they love you and will go to extraordinary ends to protect their privacy.
They come. They also know this planet on a scale of 1 to 10 is a 9.5 in terms of danger compared to so many others. We are a primitive species against incredible odds at this time and some come back because they see the potential for good in humanity. They know we need all the help we can get but they are not bloody crazy enough to say.. "we are here! Where is Klaatu?"

first they considered intelligent life form (what ever shape they may have ) thus you cant blame them for keeping their distance we (on earth trying to get out of it do you think any body is stupid enough to come to earth with people like bush around.

The most convincing argument that there is intelligent life on other planets is that it hasn't tried to contact us yet.

Aliens were made as written stories for cjhildren but in your picture you look older than the dog picture here in yahoo answers. Ah you are still young in thinking.
