That was my answer 2 weeks ago to the question, "What do you think was the cause of Couture's win over Sylvia?"
My answer was chosen "Best Answer". Now you've turned it around and made it into a question.
Yours IS a great question, but I believe there's only one person who knows the truth, Sylvia himself. The rest of us can only guess, but it would not be the first time a fighter has underestimated his opponent and lost and it won't be the last time either.
Maybe others can offer their theories too.
Thanks for posing the question!

The match-up was in Randy's favour; Sylvia likely didn't expect the Natural to focus and improve so much on stand up etc. when he's supposed to be retired/ Sylvia knew that Couture could take him down at will [groundpoundsubmission] and when he found himself overwhelmed with never before seen punching confidence, along with possibility of being taken down the loss was inevitable.
Being cocky an starting conflicts is what some fighters do to make the fight more personal so they can get hyped an into the fight so it's no big deal what Tim said, it makes more people show up/ fight more interesting. He's aka the Maniac so expect atleast something to be off.

I think Sylvia didn't believe Couture had a shot at beating him. If you have ever read or seen a Tim Sylvia interview? He thinks he's the best fighter in the world. Personally I think he's slightly above average. The Heavyweight division to me is the weakest of all the divisions. And Sylvia always has a height and weight advantage over his opponent. In Sylvia's last title defence against Monson, Randy Couture said he spotted a flaw in Sylvia's fight game. That's why he took the fight, he was sure he could defeat the overrated Sylvia. And we all know what happened. The next question is who gets a shot at the Title next?

First of all Tim had a legitimate injury (and this is coming from a guy that hates Tim Sylvia) he was fine to fight but it prevented him from doing alot of his normal training and went to see Pat Miletich's doctor to get his back fixed for good so it wont be an excuse in the future. Also Tim was so rocked from that first punch that when Pat told in that it was round five and he had to KO Randy to win, Tim actually was very surprised because he thought it was round 2, he doesn't even remember most of the fight, Randy took Tim out of game plan within the first 5 seconds, from that point on Sylvia was lost.

I think Tim definetly took Randy too lightly. I think this is what caused him to get rocked really bad with the first punch Randy threw. Once this happened Sylvia looked like he unraveled and did not know what to do. A guy with a reach advantage of 12 inches should not get dominated the way Sylvia did unless he just looked past his opponent and took him too lighlty. Also, look at the fact that Randy was gasping for air for 2 rounds and yet he still was majorly in control of the fight even when he looked gassed. Sylvia had to of taken Randy too lighlty because he was just dominated from start to finish.

Oh yes! Sylvia kept saying on he was in his prime & Couture was a bitter old man for not being able to beat Chuck Liddell. Randy said from day one, he saw holes in Sylvia's game that told him he had a chance of victory or he would've never taken the fight. For Sylvia to say he was injured in the post fight conference and imply that's the reason he lost makes him look pitifull. I guess the next time we see Sylvia he definately won't be wearing the championship belt since he was the only UFC champion known for having his belt on "at all times" regardless of if he was defending it, was cornering for someone, or was just in the stands watching a fight. Now that screams loser in my book.

Almost everyone has injuries who is in MMA. Fedor Emelianenko fought Mirko Filipovic with a broken finger but didn't complain at all. Sylvia just got owned, plain and simple. However, i like randy couture a lot and it's unfortunate that he's going to be part of Mirko cro cop's highlight reel. I was really hoping to see a Mirko / sylvia fight just so sylvia can see first hand who one of the best strikers in MMA is. Not Sylvia that's for sure.

Yes, sorta. I don't disbelieve the injury..can't know since he did fight. If he was fighthting someone else, he might've called off the fight due to his injury so in that respect he took coture lightly.
In general, i think he just figured any 43 year old or however old he was....was over the hill. I mean shamrock was decent in his day and tito owned him countless times. Gracie got beaten pretty badly in my mind.
I wanted couture to win but if i was betting, woudl've put it on sylvia.
Couture did have that knock out punch and wans't able to make something out of it. I think there was a pretty good chance for sylvia to knock out couture later on and he realized he lost hte decision, I think he shifted strategies to take a beating and let couture tire (that doesn't look right..the spelling) himself out so he could land that one knock out blow. I don't konw. besides stamina....i dont' think decisions show dominance.

You know how you tell if these guys are full of crap after a loss? Watch their next fight. If Sylvia comes out like a beast in his next fight, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Randy won't have the belt long enough for Sylvia to get his revenge though, and he'll never be champion again.

I think Tim changed his style alot after getting the belt...He looked past randy and that hurt him. Also Tim had lots of chanced in that fight but he never tried to unload, and you're never going to knock anyone out with a jab. I think Tim was essentially a bully and like most bullies he got punched in the first ten seconds of the fight and never came back. Great Question though...
