I think Kevin Mitchel had a great year in 1989, but overall, his career was pretty unremarkable. (except for when he caught that fly ball with his bare hand!)
AND
Although Barry Larkin was not a "no name", his MVP stats in 1995 were some of the least impressive ever.

You almost have to say it's the 2006 MVPs, Justin Morneau and Ryan Howard. What were they before last year?

I'd have to go Terry Pendleton here. That is one choice I distinctly remember being opposed to.
