I bought the Sims (1) very shortly after it came out, and became an instant fan. It was a great game, but it had its limitations. You could only do so much with a family, and after a point it just became boring until you started a new family.
The Sims 2, however, has enough variety and additions that you can really play the same family without getting bored! Your Sims do more, look better, and age! You can follow a Sim from birth to the grave - literally - and watch the generations grow up and have their own children. There are additional goals to achieve as well, aspirations and personalities thrown into the mix as well.
You can go downtown, go on dates, start a business, raise pets, and ... even become a vampire, werewolf, alien, or a plantperson!
Sims can now be promiscuous, family oriented, or pleasure seeking sloths ... and sometimes they can be a great mix of these and more.
Also, the graphics and interfaces are so far ahead and so much better that playing Sims 1 again feels like switching back to dial up after having broadband internet :)
You can customize clothes, walls, floors, faces, hair, eyes, most parts of the SIms and their world around them. It's a great game, and yes, it is by far a deserving sequel to the first.
So I guess I am saying Sims 2 is better :)

Sims 2, by way way far better.
I was given the Sims 1 with all the expansion packs last christmas, after trying Sims 2. It was amusing for a time as I tried the expansion packs, as they add their own kind of magic, but it will always be seen by me as a very basic version of the game. The Sims 2 adds more fun and new features to play with. More things to do and on top of everything, the whole game is in 3D, and you can rotate the camera freely, instead of the boring isometric view that can only rotate every 90 degrees at a time.

Oh, and by the way, I heard they are already making Sims 3. But I'm not sure whether it's true or not.

sims 1 is way way over... it can also be called the basic... so go for sims 2 but you have got to have a high pentium or good PC to run it... okay?

defo got to be the sim s 2 its way cool you can watch your sims grow from babys to elders not like the sims 1 where they stay the same age plus the graphics are mint hope that helped

Of course the Sims 2..
It has better graphics. It takes a huge toll on your computer though. Sometimes makes it lags..

I would have to go with Sims 1. I love that game! I always play it on the weekends and afternoons!

i have played SIMS1 only but i think sims 2 is better because i've seen trailors of SIMS2.

sim2 is better then sim1
but if u have good pc
u can also create ur town or downtown
set towers and much more
