First thing you should do is not waste your time eating and watching TV. Get active, find a hobby you are interested in, make some new friends. I'm guaranteed you will feel better.

Could you join a forum to make friends? Everyone feels alone at times - its why we believe in god (though I'm not knocking anyone's belief here).
Are there any clubs or groups you could join too? Just one good friend/family member makes all the difference. When I feel down I send e-mails to friends and family, they ignore the fact I'm depressed (got their own problems)but they do reply.
The worst thing you can do is lock yourself away from others - even when its the only thing you wanna do

OK don't laugh, this sounds plausible, I haven't tried it. My dad was a psychiatrist so I don't take this lightly.
This female Dr. I saw on TV recently has surmised that if you tell yourself out loud, preferably in the mirror, positive things opposite of the bad feelings you have, you will MOVE those thoughts from the lower emotional center of the brain to the higher logical(math) center in the prefrontal lobe, above your eyes, thus temporally muting those bad emotional feelings. She also suggests smiling at yourself in the mirror. She says this gives your brain positive feedback and helps to relieve the depression. The more you do it the more it works.
turn your frown upside down :-)

My favourite thing is to get a collection of sad songs, wallow in my self-pity for a little bit, and then indulge myself on something that I love, like reading a book. If it is happening too often, though, I guess you just have to ask yourself if you are happy where you are. If you aren't, remember that the people you know now are only a tiny fraction of the people in the world... you only have to move to find some new friends, I think.

Find someone or a group of people with similar interests, even if it's on the Internet. If you're feeling alone, it can help to relieve it to feel like you're a part of something.

I sit lonely and brood over. Its bad. Dont do that. Brooding over sadness gives a negative satisfaction and a certain degree of addiction.
Please encourage positive thinking and develop socialising. It will help.

Chocolate is a good short term fix, for long term results, eat ice cream, by the gallon.
