I'm guessing your making reference the old cliche - look what the critics said about Tennessee Williams. In that case it is basically that he was a bad writer and that his plays were terrible. As the line implies it is just saying the critics don't always know everything. Although he did die penniless. He was a drunk, that wasn't just the critics saying that.
