I breastfed my daughter for the first year, and for the first 3 - 6 months she needed to be burped - after each side. I was told that they actaully get quite a bit of milk, and fast, so they need to be burped - but EVERY baby is different!

With my little one I burp her when she pulls off the breast for a break. I hold her up on my right shoulder and either pat her back or rub up and down on her left side (which is where her stomach is). A burp normally comes quite quickly. Then we either finish this breast, or if she has, move over to the next breast. We burp again using the same method when she pulls off for the second time.
Sometimes a burp doesn't come however when I lay her down to change her and then pick her up again, a burp usually appears! Sometimes, if she's been very relaxed during feeding there are no burps to be had. Also, when I feed her during the night, she often sleeps right through the feed and I don't burp her then - just lay her gently back in her crib.
You can tell when the gas is bothering your niece because she will raise her legs towards her tummy (like a crunch) and often let out a short noise. You should try to burp her then to relieve the pressure.

I never burped my son either, if I did it would take a half hour to get him to burp. If I just held him upright he would burp in less than 5 minutes. Not all babies take well to burping.
Also breastfed babies if they are latched on properly they may not swallow any air, it depends on the baby. Just like some adults swallow more air when they are eating than others.
If the baby isn't fussy I don't get what the problem is? Seriously people are obsessed with baby burps and farts. If a baby burps on their own hours after a feeding people say you didn't burp them enough, if they fart something is wrong with their diet. All adults burp sometimes and we all fart whether we want to admit it or not studies have shown most adults produce the exact same amount of gas. That's just part of being human, and so long as the gas isn't bothering you, me, or a baby just leave it be.

I would nurse my baby for 15 minutes on one breast, sit her up to burp and then nurse on the other breast and then burp her after that. This way, the baby is getting about the same amount of burping a bottle-fed baby would.

Breast fed babies tend not to need burping so much as they don't take in air with their milk. When I was breastfeeding my baby I'd hold her up to my shoulder for a little while and rub her back after feeds and she occasionally burped, but didn't as often as not.

Breastfed babies don't always need to be burped. After all, there is no air to swallow in mom's breasts. :-) If baby has a good latch and isn't upset and crying prior to feeding, there may well be no need to burp.

You should burp when your baby is done on each side. I wouldn't recommend NOT burping your baby no matter how you are feeding it. Gassy babies are not fun, and they swallow air no matter what route they are being fed.

When she acts like she doesn't want the breast anymore, burp her. Then latch her back on.
All babies need to burp - no matter if they're bottle fed or breastfed.

My son never needed burping... we tried in the begining and nothing ever came out. We stopped and he never had a problem. He never spit up either. I can actually push in on his tummy and make him fart... I never did it on purpose, just if i put him in a funny position over my arm!
