let x = width of rectangle
"The length of a rectangle is 5 ft. more that the width"
length is x + 5

Formula for area is area = width * length
"The area of the rectangle is 24 sq. ft. How long is the rectangle"
This means solve for x
24 = x * (x+5)
24 = x^2 + 5x
0 = x^2 + 5x - 24
x^2 + 5x - 24 = 0
factor
(x+8)(x-3) = 0
x + 8 = 0; x = -8
x - 3 =0; x = 3
so the width is either 3 or -8
a width cannot be negative so
width = 3

since length = x + 5
length = 3 + 5
length = 8 ft

so the answer is
8 feet long

properly, 12*5=60 and 240/60 = 4. Then multiply 4 to the ratios, so u understand the size is 4*12 or 40 8 ft and four*5=20 ft is your width. for this reason, your perimeter is two situations the size + 2 situations the width or 2*40 8 + 2*20. This equals ninety six +40 or 136 ft. ~tada.
