They don't always think he is right But it is natural to feel sympathy for the underdog. Seeing a large corporation defeated in a court case by an individual will always cheer some people ,irrespective of the rights and wrongs of the case. The same applies to sport.when a small league team is matched against a much higher rated team a lot of people cheer on the tiddlers to beat the big time boys, again just sympathy for the underdog.

Hmm, I'm not sure that your generalization of "always" is accurate.
However, I think this. People like to support the person who seems to be losing. It makes them feel good. People in support of the underdog assume that there are lots of people on the other side supporting the winning side. The thing is, if you have a lot of people supporting the underdog, there are fewer people supporting the person who was supposedly winning. Eventually the underdog is not really under anything, but actually in the lead, although the image is still that of the underdog.
Not sure if that answered your question, exactly, but it got me thinking. Hopefully it helps you.
May God bless you.

I guess Americans usualy do argue for the underdog, since we're underdogs ourselves. The founding fathers escaped to the Americs because of Britin's rule and religious persecution, and the bill of rights, the Civil liberties union, and and We the People Declaration of Ind. has always been to get every american a fair shot.

I personally think that people secretly admire a person with the guts to stand up against the might of the state, even if they think the person is in the wrong, they support his courage.
The problems arise when governments side with the underdogs instead of the majority, and engage in what they term as 'positive discrimination' in favour of minority groups. For by doing so they discriminate AGAINST the majority group and in doing so cause resentment and distrust.
There should be one set of rules for everyone - equality for all.

I don't. The judgment should be made on who is right, according to the laws and where the laws are immoral, according to what is morally correct.
To do anything else is wrong. The concept of pulling for the underdog is a socialist concept, you know like class warfare, they use it to divide, so they can conquer.
