Download the Open Office suite, openoffice.org. It is a free desktop suite similar to Microsoft Office. Except, the writing program has a free built in .doc to .pdf converter.

Make sure you have both Word and Adobe Acrobat. In Word go to print, in the print window go to printer name, then choose Acrobat Distiller. Click okay, this will change your Word document to a pdf.
