I'm from India. My parents keep trying to marry off my sister to some asshole based on a lot of 'criteria' but without honouring that love is the most important criteria. They call it 'arranged marriage' and I call it 'prostitution'. I several times told my mother that they have no role in choosing a mate for my sis and that she has to be encouraged to get into a relationship of her own, but to no avail. I broke off from my family because of this. Anybody faced a similar situation?

Good for you it seems u really understand that love not social standing is what is important. Hopefully your sis doesnt listen to them and follows her heart.

You are up against a cultural brick wall. Your parents may have left India, but took all of their prejudices with them. You must know, that in India arranged marriages are pretty much the norm. You must also know, that sadly, women are not highly regarded (although things seem to be changing slowly).>In the long run, by cutting yourself from your family, you have in a sense, left your sister without any support. If she is unhappy with the situation, and is strong enough to put her foot down and say NO! she has a chance of finding someone who will care for her and love her and not consider her as a purchased piece of goods. Can she live with you? Give it some thought and try to reopen ties with your family.
