Does anyone know what some others names being tossed around were, and/ or how they decided on the Dbacks?

The Rattlers or the Armadillos!

I think Diamondbacks had a dual meaning that was attractive to the owners. There is the baseball diamond, and the fact that the diamondback rattlesnake is indigenous to the area.
