Does anyone know what some others names being tossed around were, and/ or how they decided on the Rays?

A contest was held to pick the team name, although it finished 4th Devil Rays owner Vince Naimoli liked it, and the name Rays was chosen with Devil Rays winning in a phone poll over Mana Rays.

Tampa Bay's owner Vince Naimoli picked the name from a phone poll conducted before the first season. He chose between the "Devil Rays" and the "Manta Rays".
Interestingly, Devil Rays was not one of the top two choices in the poll. It was actually the 4th.

I know the team has considered shortening the name to just "Rays", which is infinitely better than "Devil Rays". If I had a say in the matter, I would suggest "Mantas".
