Open the piano and look inside it. You should see several dates in pencil. These dates are made by the tuner(s) who have tuned the piano. If there are regular dates inside, that's a good sign. Play all the keys of the piano and try both the left and right pedals to make sure they work. Then play the piano. How does it feel (I prefer weighted keys myself--they have to be pressed slightly harder to go all the way down, but they make the piano more expressive.) How does it sound? Some pianos have a richer sound, some are more brilliant. Whichever you prefer is the kind you should buy.

If along the way you hear any buzzing, thudding or twanging, have the piano checked by a tuner before you consider buying it. If the sounding board is cracked, you don't want to buy that instrument.

Good luck!

Hi! I restore antique furniture, and have worked with dozens of piano's. This is somethings you'll need to look for...assuming you have the room for it;
check that the sound-board & frame is in good shape,no cracks,etc..;
that it's tuned correctly(this could be costly if not);
All the keys respond and that the hammers are not broke;
it sounds good (even if tuned, it may not sound good);
the cabinet isn't warped, rotted,or termite damaged.The condition of the finish also will affect the overall sound.
If it's a grand or baby grand,check that the legs are secure.
.....And most importantly, will you look good laying across It?lol.

just check how well preserved it is. if you aren't skilled enough, take someone who is and let him/her play it and tell you. just listen to the sound and i think you should now if it's the right one.
