In the old days, women who were wealthy had servants. These servants would help them dress. There were no zippers then, everything was either buttons or ties. And women would change clothes throughout the day.
It was easier for the servants, who of course were mostly right-handed, if the buttons were on the right hand side.
And it became common place for all women's clothing.

because if the fashions of the times made men and women's clothes look similar, and, so, women don't want to put on a man's smelly clothes by accident. this might of mattered more in the old days, maybe, as more men were a little dirtier back when.
