Apartments would be multiple apartment buildings or multiple homes within a building. A single apartment is separate from the others within the apartment building.

The word apartment comes from compartment. Meaning an enclosed area within a larger object or area. Meaning that the 'apart' section of apartments refers to the individual area within the larger building.
