Generally speaking, it doesn't matter where you go in the US, there will always be rude and nice Americans. I am from the east coast, now living in the Pacific (Hawaii) and I have known some really nice and really mean people in both areas. I agree with UB Happy to an extent. I too have traveled outside of the US extensively. While I have encountered all kinds of "nice", "good-natured" Americans out there, I am kind of embarrassed about the way some Americans act in foreign countries. Some people's heads really swell when others tell them that "America is number 1".... particularly in Asia for some reason. Perhaps these few people give us all a bad reputation.
( I was specifically referring to a few American friends of mine who promised their Asian girlfriends the world and then dumped them when they met someone 'hotter' or some people I knew who picked fights for absolutely no reason; I feel like its these kinds of people who give all of us a bad reputation)
keep in mind I said a 'few people' not all Americans....

Most people I've met on foreign travels say they like Americans; the down side may be that most Americans don't travel outside of the US, so they are not skilled in the culture of other countries; and often don't realize they are being rude.
When this is pointed out, a few don't care, and say so; the majority are embarrassed and apologize for not knowing local etiquette.
I am American, travel a lot, sometimes make mistakes, but forgive "rude" foreigners who don't know American culture when they are visiting. What goes around, comes around.

Most American speak their mind even if its rude. The goverment wont hunt them down and kill their families like other countries do for saying what ever the want. Americans are taught to have freedom of speech and at times take that privilege over board, just to prove their point.

Generalizing, the east coast isn't rude, it's very rush rush. The south seems very rude and racist....the west coast is very nice, most ppl there are friendly. But I am only a Canadian who visits once a year, not an American.

I am asian and my opinion is American's say it like it is. They have convictions and this works. Saves a lot of beating around the bush. Asians, in particular, aren't very convincing. Especially those in developed nations. That is particularly why we should adopt the american approach especially in the service sectors e.g. hotels and restaurants.
