If your goal is to gain weight because you are currently underweight and want to gain muscle mass, it is advisable to begin with weight lifting. Doing this will increase your muscle mass, but also increase your hunger. You will be able to eat more protein, such as those found in foods like fish, chicken, and beef. I recommend eating a bit more beef for weight gain as well as muscle mass. Lee Haney, 8-time Mr. Olympia, stated he ate red meat to help him not only gain HEALTHY weight but to put on defined muscle mass. You may want to drink some protein drinks. There are over the counter brands available at Walgreen's and Wal-mart, as well as the Ensure brand. Pastas also help by providing your body with extra carbohydrates, and they do provide boosts of energy, but if you eat plenty of pasta, it will sit on your body as extra weight. Eggs are a good source, and regular milk. Make sure you drink milk to strengthen your bones if you plan on gaining healthy weight. DON'T gorge on fatty foods, or gorge on foods in general; this is not the way to put on healthy weight. Eat healthier, but eat a bit more and exercise, especially weight lifting. It is not necessary to worry about how much you start out lifting, just do it a weight you are comfortable with, and build up from there. If lifting weights, use the "pyramid" system. This means you do 3-5 sets of repetitions of a weight lifting exercise, and you increase the weight with each set. Start out with 10 lb. dumbbells lifting them 15 times, then increase the weight to 15 lbs., then 20, so on and so forth. The key is building muscle mass by exercise and diet. DON'T take ANY supplements!!! Protein powder is O.K., but that is all I would recommend you try using.

Take 6 meals a day. Eat as much as you can. If you are too full, drink something sour to help faster digestion. Most important is to have a large meal for dinner.
