could be :
1- you get tensed while you do leg kicks ( common mistake ) as u have to relax your legs while kicking water and focus only on your foot pushing water while moving your leg from your hips . in crawl stroke leg kicks there is loads of pressure on your lower back so be careful .
2- you swim with your head out of water ( this mainly cause neck soreness but can also be lot pressure on your lower back while doing leg kicks
3- other technique mistakes like breathing to side can cause tense in your leg kicks in order to keep your face out of water
You should see a good instructor to help you out with that and always know that water provides comfortable level of resistance and can never lead to injury unless you are working against other resistance which is tense !!!

There can be 2 reasons :
1. Your muscles just neet time to get used to the extra strain, bcause when you swim you use muscles the you don't use on a daily basis. If this is the case you will notice that after several times they will hurt less. (but you need to be consistant and go swimming more than once a week).
2. You might not be swimming correctly, try changing the angles of your hands and legs in the water and see if it helps.
(Best is to ask some one at the swimming pool if your moves are correct).
Have fun in the water =).

I think you are supposed to be using those muscles to roll through the stroke which is counter-balanced by your kick. If you do an hour or so of swimming... you are going to use muscles that don't get a huge work out sitting at home on the sofa watching the Simpsons ~ so you will get some response in the form of muscle fatigue. Swimming is usually really good for your back!
My shoulders for example, really hurt today from this morning's session.. all I want to do now is lie on the sofa and watch Simpsons. Coach handed me a huge set of paddles to try out.... they are like at least the size of dinner plates. He said the Chinese team were using them at Homebush pool during training for the 2000 Games. I think I have RSI now.

Sounds nice to me, do you swim alot? If now not swimming makes use of alot of muscle groups you do not use in aerobic or weight lifting. Give it an afternoon or 2 to relaxation and also you will have to suppose nice once more to get again to the fitness center. The primary factor isn't to over do it. Try a few slight stretches because it might be muscle cramps/spasms

Your muscles might not be used to what you are doing in swimming, so it might put extra strain on your body. I think that if you swim more than your muscles will get used to your movement and it'll hurt less
or
You might be doing one of the 4 competitive strokes with the incorrect form.
I'm guessing that you might be getting your paints form doing the back stroke, because you might perhaps be leaning to far back.

It's normal. Usually, people get cramps after swimming for a long time, or if they swim competitivley.
