I could tell you one thousand and one things that excite my mind, and only have begun to say..
.. the whisper of my love's sweet voice in my ear..
.. the first rays of sun heralding the dawn
.. the overture to the symphony..
.. the opening passage of a great novel..
.. the ringing of my phone late at night..
all these things and so much more...
But, a few nights back, when my two-year old niece stood in front of me and introduced me to her friends, mr soft bear and her little ponies... and showed me how she could put together and operate the little carousel that came in a happy meal.. a poorly designed little device destined to be problematic at best.. still she continued to patiently put it back together each time it fell apart, and with each attempt she tried different variations.. all the time smiling and singing her made up song about mr soft bear.. laughing.. and finally she let me hold the carousel.. offered it to me.. and i held it on a chairseat for her.. and she at once understood .. and reached to it, turned the little crank.. and made the little pony dance around.. then soon found other toys around the room which she could place on the carousel and turn them round and round as well... smiling.. laughing.. singing..
Later that night, as I was returning home, driving along with only my thoughts for company.. and as I often do.. my thoughts turned to you.. and i knew then the answer to your question..
What excites my mind?
I see it in the eyes of a child, the lively mind of that child, that fresh budding mind, quick and inquisitive.. open to the world.. unfettered by all those chains we all so quickly come to bear on our thoughts.. and more slowly to loose..
