i have a 10month old water dragon and when I handle her she thrashes at first then calms down. Only problem is her claws are quite sharp and have started cutting me quite badly. She doesnt do it maliciously but its starting to be a pain and makes handling again hard as the cuts are sore.

Has anyone else had this or has any advice to help?

Try handling her when she's cooler, so not as active, until she get more used to you, she should settle down after a while, & scratch less,
but sanding her nails a little wont harm, but be very careful of clipping it might cause infection, so not really advisable, though you could ask your vet??, but do make sure they understand about reptiles first, as not all do.

My old Water Dragon, grew to loved been handled, & loved sitting on my lap watching TV, but she was a scratcher too when I first had her, so dont worry she will be fine in time, they are great pets, I really miss mine.

do not use clippers on a water dragon use an emory board like humans use for their nails reptiles cuticals run almost the length of their nails till they are full grown. my vet uses a battery powered dremel. I use an emory board. if you cut the cutical it will bleed pretty good. and might cause an infection. wrap him in a towel and put one foot out at a time file each nail just enough to get the hook off and no more. any more and you will inhibit his climbing ability.

WELL, YOUR PROBLEM IS VERY SIMPLE. Get a nail clipper and cut your dragons nail. no need to worry coz it will grow for sure. but be careful, you might get your dragons fingers clipped.
