A few years ago I had a minor bump in my car, as it was outside a volvo main dealer I asked for a quote to repair it. They quoted £690 including a guarantee on repairs. Insurance company wanted it to go to approved repairer, ended up costing £1790. No wonder insurance is so expensive.

You would actually expect a posh main dealer to charge more than an approved but tatty repair shop.

It's insurance economics 101. they pay the prices and then they are justified to increase your premiums and make more profit. It's a vicious circle.

There are many rigid guidelines that a repair shop must meet before becoming an approved one therefore the insurance company trusts them and so should you. Just like MANY other businesses in this world, price is not always the most important factor.

You are right to smell a rat. Insurance companies, like banks and other institutions get business discounts from their preferred/authorised partners so, without knowing the exact workings, the nose tells you something smelly going on!

Most insurance companies are not willing to pay high prices, that why they want three estimates and their own.

Same with windshields. Many times, you'll find two prices, one for out-of-your-own-pocket cost, and the other insurance company cost.

It's big business, and they have lots of lawyers.
