It's legal now because they sell songs. It was illegal before because they offered copywrited music for free download which would be against the law.

Napster was what is known as a peer to peer file sharing network. What you do is you have a folder on your computer where you can allow others to remotely download songs, files, etc from and likewise, when you are connected to other people you can (provided they allow it) have access to their files in a similar "shared" folder on their computers. It is called peer to peer because there is no central file server involved that regulates any of this.

The music recording industry put a stop to it because people were copying CDs and then putting new songs on Napster that people could download for free thereby eliminating the need to pay to buy CDs.

From what I understand, Napster is now a subscription pay service that you can use for a fee. Napster wasn't the only peer to peer file sharing network like this - There was also LimeWire and KaZaa. I haven't really kept up with any of this lately so I can't tell you what's available right now. I know that you really can't use any of these well unless you have a fast broadband connection, which most people probably have by now....

Sorry but napster has no value now but the meaning that came with napster has left a legacy that will go on for generations napster was a p2p sharing software like limewire, kazaa and torrents for the new gen of today. it's legal and dead too all but it will always remember as the first of it's kind.
