How is genetic engineering the same as selective breeding?

It is not really the same. Selective breeding is simply breeding for a certain trait. Genetic engineering involves direct removal or insertion or specific traits. The are similar in that they both help to increase the chance a specific trait will be expressed in the next generation but they are no the same.
