what are the function of GTE (glucose-tris-EDTA) and NaOH in plasmid isolation?

NaOH is used in bacterial lysis. Tris is a pH buffer commonly used in biological experiments. EDTA is a Ca2+ chelator, this helps prevent Ca2+ dependent DNAse activity, and I've never figured out the glucose myself, so I don't use it.
