If I was in LA for just two or three days what would the best sites to visit for spotting birds? I would be using public transport so they need to be accessible. Pretty much all the birds would be new, even the most common ones because I've not been to the Americas before, so all suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

'L.A" is a big place. Not sure exactly where you will be but I will name a few:
Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Area
Bolsa Chica
Newport Back Bay
Huntington Botanical Gardens (Arcadia, CA)
Descanso Gardens
Malibu Creek State Park
Irvine Park
Eaton Canyon

It may be hard to get around on public transportation, we do not have a very good system here, you may be much better off with a cheap rental...it will save you a lot of wasted time standing at a bus stop!

Here is a web page that might help you: http://www.laaudubon.org/
I have done some birding in Los Angeles. I really loved it. There is a contact email on this site. They should be able to give you locations that are accessible by public transportation. When we go we always rent a car, so I am hestitant to recommend any places, as I dont know if you will be able to get there. Good birding! Come to Texas sometime. It rocks!

If you go to the beach you will see lots of birds, both common and exotic. Many of them are only wearing bikini tops and some are on rollerblades, where they skate along the boardwalks.
