My first public speech was about nurses during the civil war and I made it in either 5th or 6th grade. It didn't bother me much. By that time I'd already had a year or two of acting lessons at the FMCT and was used to the idea of an audience.
Then in high school I became one of those weird people who do (as I've mentioned before) the competitive speech thing.

You should look out in the direction of the audience. Choose a few friendly faces and gaze briefly from one to another, trying not to stare in one direction only.
Understand that everyone has been in a similar situation at some time in their lives.
There is a first speech or first time in front of an audience larger than the classroom for everyone.
Imagine the audience sitting there in their underwear.
Close your eyes and imagine the audience listening, laughing, and applauding.

Was not a speech but I was in the band in 7th grade and was the first chair for the flute section. Well opening night of the concert and there I sat at the ready, the conductor raised his baton indicating that we were to begin playing and ...... I froze like an iceberg. I sat motionless for the entire first song all I could see were eye's staring back at me from the audience. It was awfull I recovered enough to play but afterwords actually threw up.
