The short answers are 1) Biochemical individuality. Some people require more vitamins than others 2) Absorption characteristics of the person taking the pills. This is different than biochemical individuality because it only looks at the ability to absorb nutrients through the gut wall (or sublingualy) 3) Nature of the dosage form. Some pills are so hard that many people cant break them down and absorb them given a) Bowel transit time, and b) friabillity of the pill. 4) Chemical structure of the ingredients in the pill. For example, we have receptor sites for right-handed tocopherol (vitamin E) but not for left handed molecules of this chemical. We don't absorb minerals very well unless they are at a low Ph (acidic).

The quality of the product and how diligent the person who is taking the supplements. Every person system is different and they tend to process things differently. The person should also be patient when taking natural supplements. It usually takes at least 30 days in order to accurately assess if the supplement is actually working.
