No one really knows why we dream, and what is their function. All we have are theories that try to explain dreaming.
Some theories are scientific and therefore are more supported by evidence and some are heritage of "folk psychology", meaning that people try to explain dreams to themselves and come up with an idea, what and why they exist. I will not deal with folk theories of mind here. Science usually states few different theories of dreaming, and order in which I present them is not relevant:
1. Dreams are result of random activation of neural cells during sleep. Thinking part of the brain try to make sense of this chaotic neural activation and in the process dream is created.
2. Dreams play a part in memory consolidation, and memory processes of the information we gathered during the day.
3. Dreams serve the function of relieving us from daily stress and emotionally charged events. By working our unresolved issues through dreams, we become relieved.
4. Evolutionary psychology came up with the new one. Dreams can be compared with rehearsal ground. Dreams often put us in situation that presents some kind of vital information for our survival or reproduction capacity, and by experiencing them through dreams, we will be more prepared for if they happen when we are awake. This supported by many facts, and maybe the most interesting ones are; a) common reported themes in dreams have been shown to be: school related, being chased, sexual experiences, falling, arriving too late, a person now alive being dead, flying, and failing an examination, and b) most prevalent emotion is anxiety which is a signal for danger.
Don't forget these are theories, and only time, and hard work will tell which ones are true, or maybe there will be some new theories that will replace the old ones, giving us more insight into dream phenomena.

Well noone knows REALLY why we dream but usually its because something is on our subconcious minds and when we get a repeated dream it's because we haven't understood that dream and why we had it. Most dreams we can't even remember, even though we dream every time. We can help ourselves remember them by having a clear mind and sleeping well.
All dreams have a reason and a meaning, for different reasons.
HAPPY DREAMING :]

Dreams are mirror of our mental activities. What someone dreams is only reflection of their overall activities . A person having some fear for something dreams of evil and becomes more feared. But a healthy and happy person dreams of heavens and good things because of their activities that is they are relaxed and have no tension. You can say that it is only a activity of brain and depends on situations.

Dream is the natural way to release mental pressure, stress etc automatically. Dream is created by our brain as a measure of self-healing from mental pressure.
If you are happy, in a state of complete serenity, if you sleep deep – you will not dream.

I think the most commonly accepted opinion is that we dream so that how brain can get some downtime and sort through all the sensory input from the previous awake time.. decide what's important, and then submit it to long term memory and discard the rest.

Dream is essential to sound sleep.
We dream all the time(sleeping , walking talking eating) the process is unending(this is minootoo's hypothesis, and my belief), but remember only some episodes.
Dream is a nature's precious gift to us.
