I love this movie, and no it didn't show Indians in a bad light. It showed them in a human light. I am not an Indian, but I understood everything the movie was trying to get across. It was very good, very moving, and I DO NOT understand why it didn't win the Oscar.

Well because some of the other movies in that category were better, although not the one that actually did win.
And as far as the movie shedding bad light on Indians...well all depends on ones outlook and opinion about what and how the movie was portraying...however I'm not Hindu and don't know that much about that, so not sure if all of the issues about that subject in the movie were true...and if they are, oh well then they were simply portraying the "truth"
And if other ppl think of it negatively - well to bad - as long as the makers of the movie and Indians feel ok and comfortable with it, it's all good ....remember u can't please everyone...lol

Whether a film gets an Oscar or not has nothing to do with how the film portrays the subjects. Life is beautiful did not portray Italians in a very good light (because they killed the guy!). But rather, it is the quality of the film which matters. Water is a beautiful film that was well acted and well written, but the Oscar committee just thought that another film was better. You can disagree with them, and I frequently do, but that's what they voted for.

oh the movie was gr8
but you know thats how it goes
you can't impress one and all
perhaps the other movies in the category were a notch above
but don't you think its an achievement 4 us that a movie directed by an indian got through even though there was cut throat competition
4 an artist awards are just a way of showing the world his/her achievements
but contentment comes from satisfaction of creative hunger

Water is essentially a humanist film. I hope people who see it will feel compassion for their fellow beings, even though they might be totally unfamiliar with the characters’ interior and exterior landscape.

Because it was boring... plain and simple! Unfortunately, hindu-bashing, even if factually correct doesn't guarantee success :)
Its main attrcation was a blouseless Lisa ray
