There is the Nuremberg Principle, which states that a soldier in wartime is responsible for his/her actions and should refuse to carry out an order which is clearly morally and / or legally wrong.

This came into being during the Nuremberg Trials following World War 2 when it was established that those on trial could not use as a defence that they were 'only following orders'.

That said, I don't think anyone, whether for the present war or against, seeks to blame soldiers for what happens, unless there is a clear case of abuse for which certain people should be disciplined.

The tendency is to blame the politicians for sending the people out there in the first place.

Imo with all that technology and expertise at their disposal I'm sure the soldiers currently risking life and limb in Iraq & Afghanistan could be better employed doing relief and humanitarian work and helping rebuild communities racked by natural disasters, and I'm sure most of them would agree.

NO ONE blames the soldiers. I am so sick of this cheap tired argument. Just because someone voices dissent against the war DOESN'T mean they blame the the noble brave men and women of our military.

I live in San Francisco, (yes in Nancy Pelosi's district) and I am as lefty liberal as they come. However, in no way do I, or anyone else who disagrees with this war blame the soldiers. This argument is erroneous on it's face and the people slinging it around are smart enough to know better.

The people who disagree with with this war (and that's 70% of us) blame the administration for leading us into unjustified battle under false pretenses. We love our troops and don't want them to die and end up horribly wounded because our president is a reckless, incompetent cowboy.

The "If you're AGAINST the war, then you're AGAINST the troops" crap has got to go. Following that logic..."If you're FOR the war then YOU WANT OUR SOLDIERS TO DIE"

Both statements are flatly untrue. I don't believe the few people left in this country who still agree with the war (that would be 29% of you ) want our troops to die. Just as those who disagree with the war do not blame the soldiers.

So everybody let's knock that off right now. You can agree or disagree with the war.... but that doesn't translate to blaming OR wanting troops to die. We all want them home safe with no more bloodshed.

Who blames the soliders?

I think everyone is aware they are just doing a job. They have no say in what that job entails. If there is any blame for anything it starts from the top on down. And thats true for any organization.

We need someone to blame, and we daon't want to blame ourselves. Politicians come close, because we elect them

I'd say its the same reason why "they always blame the messenger". Its about going after the one that who brought the news rather than the one who sent him to deliver it.

It starts from the top down. Rumsfeld was responsible the situation that lead to Abu Gharib. Does that mean the soliders aren't individually responsible for torturing fellow human beings?
