i think the ideal american meal is the Thanksgiving Meal: turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, beans, and a soda.

I could say that the most people consider the American food as a fast food which made in fast way like hamburger,hot dawg.have a nice day.

corn and various beans and squash. grains. Think of native american foods and you will find the answer.
America is made up of a lot of different cultures. It is a melting pot, so there is no one food...it's kind of an infusion of various foods. I mean, it was in america where pizza's were changed to take the form and style it is now. that is just an example. we infuse from everywhere, from pizza to hot dogs to BBQ to cajun food to california infusion to ...everything. even sushi and mexican food have been americanized and infused differently.
so i guess americans eat international food... changed around a bit. and pumped up full of hormones.
and each region has specialties. In cali have oranges and avocados.

Apple pie? Popcorn, Campbell soup, barbeque, hotdogs with relish, chips of all flavors, thick steak, potatoe salad, Martha Washington cake, and tada, new for the millenium funny brownies.

Certain types of food that were conceived in America. BBQ hot dogs burgers corn on the cob and chips.

It's really hard to say since most foods (like the hamburger from Hamburg, Germany(?), Pizza from Italy from Italy, etc.)
I personally believe it's the hot dog and donut.

Well the common "American food" is typically perceived has hot-dogs and hamburgers; but... if you think about it, America is a mix of cultures and cuisines so its kind of hard to pinpoint what "American food" is.
