no its not im afraid. shame, because i too am a huge fan of the TCM's and Leatherface..

supposedly based on Ed Gein - a murdered who killed one or two women and dug up bodies, using their bodies for sex and for furniture purposes. He is also the inspiration for Norman Bates too..

the only thing that leatherface and ed gein have in common is that they both skinned victims and wore their skins as clothing..
another thing that i believe can be argued is that Leatherface does whatever his family tell him to do as he is mentally retarded, Ed gein was said to be possessed by the dead mother who controlled him all his life

Certain elements of the film were taken from the Ed Gein story like bone sculpted furniture and the fact that he wore a mask, but everything else was invented for the films. The "true story" the film is based on did not take place in Texas, it didn't involve groups of people (only people that were alone), there was no deranged inbred family members involved, and he did not use a chainsaw.

It is partially based on a true story that isn't very much related. The truth grosses you out as much as the movie version IMHO.

The story is pretty long, so I posted some links for you.

Here's a partial story from the About.com link:
"Thomas Hewitt AKA Leatherface is a fictional character. However, the Thomas Hewitt character was inspired by Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein, who never used a chain saw but did have a grotesque fascination with human body parts and liked to decorate his home with them as well as create masks and clothing with skin from his victims."

Sorta sounds like "Silence of the Lambs" too huh?

Oh, and don't ever look for info on the Black Dahlia, I saw some photos on a website and I am still going "Ewwww!"

it was based on a true story but a lot of it has been dramatized. recently though maybe five years ago a man was arrested in atown near where i live they found a collection of guns and knives ready to kill people and he had a hit list of people he was going to kill, when he was investigated it came out that he had been on death row for murder he had hacked two men to pieces, and then got off on a technecality.and moved to england. they called this the real texas chain saw masacre. but i dnt think it was the one the film was based on

About as true a story as Fargo. Leatherface is very loosely based on Ed Gein just as Buffalo Bill was in Silence of the Lambs.

No. It and other films are based loosely on Ed Gein. A nutter who was obsessed with his mother who told him all women were whores apart from her (Norman Bates in Psycho) He killed his brother when he questioned their mothers authority and strictness. He abducted and killed 2 women and used their skin to make himself a 'woman suit' (Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs) He might also have eaten parts of the women. He also dug up attractive newly buried corpses (he knew if they were attractive or not by looking in the obituaries section of his local paper) and mutilated the corpses (Grave robbing was a part of the Texas chainsaw massacre movie).

Not really. The story is actually taken in part from the story of Ed Gein, a serial killer from Wisconsin. He gained infamy because when he was finally caught, his house contained many pieces of "clothing" that were actually stiched together from human body parts. Pieces of this real story were also the inspiration for Silence of the Lambs and Psycho.

Well, the whole movie was based on a true story. Maybe the movie exaggerated a little... But either way, it was a really thrilling movie!
