No, trees do not ever stop growing; they slow their growth rate as the years continue. If undisturbed by man, they can grow old as 2 to 3000 years old. This is proven by the Giant Sequoia's in California. (The "General Sherman Tree", which is the tallest tree in the world, by volume, measures at about 275 feet high, has a maximum diameter of about 38 feet and one of it's thickest "branches" is 6 feet 8 inches. It is estimated to be around 2200 years old!) Many of these "old world growth" trees, may at times, be hollow in the middle trunk portion, which I assume you have seen pictures of "cars driving through them". Even though the middle sections (or growth rings) may be "dead", the outer layers are "alive" and still directing nutrients and water to the upper sections of it's body.
Too bad so many of these trees were cut down for lumber in the late 1800's. It was thought that the inner parts of these massive trees would yield profitable plank board for lumber and housing. Only problem was that these trees are porous and light, and the only thing they were good for was slit rails for fences and once chopped up, they were used for hen houses and barns. What a waste for such magnificent creatures made by the Hand of God. Hope you have seen them or will someday.

All species of tree will stop growing taller at a certain point. However they will continue to grow wider and somewhat fuller in the branch and leaf dept. Hence the counting of the rings to see the age of a tree. Something like people really get wider as they get older and hairer too. :)
