the arteries, capiteries, veins etc in or around the heart are still functioning but for only a short period of time.

It's a bit like a wind-up toy or watch, it will continue playing and working after you have winded it up, then it will stop. The heart is the same, it will continue to beat for a while on its own, then it will depend on being in the right 'atmosphere' to continue it's beating....

Ewww! Does it? Maybe it takes a while to stop. It still has blood pumping for a little bit.

What freaked me out was when I heard that a chicken still runs with its head cut off! Poor thing. I'm glad I didn't grow up on a farm! Why did the chicken cross the road? He lost his head!
