I know this has been asked before, but it is not working for me!
I have Microsoft 2003, it should be new enough.
I've followed all of the instructions in Help and other online guides and after I enter the formula and hit enter, only the formula itself remains in the cell. Or it does not add the whole range that I requested to be added.
Frustrating!

"=sum(A1:A50)"

if you put this in A51, it will add everything from A1 to A50. If it still doesn't work, put the cursor on A51, Edit, Clear, All, and try again.

I'll bet you forgot to put the "=" sign in front of the formula and Excel thinks it is just some text.

Either you are asking a complicated question that requires advance answers. eg copy/pastespecial/values/add option or
you are asking a basic question. In that case, ask your 10 year old nephew who work on excel before and show you how to do =sum(..)
