Hi all

I started working as a telller 6 months ago when i moved out froms San Francisco to a smaller area in the central coast.

I took this job because it was the only available at the time although i really wanted to start at a personal banker position.

Now that such position is available, im running into the whole your just a teller thing...

I truly think that CSR positions such as a teller position really open up your eyes to the banking industry and should give you a perfect head start against any new comer to the banking world.

Now i cant get a banker position because I have prior experience as a teller?

What is this?

please let me know if i am way out of line here.

thanks

If you want to be promoted, show your supervisors that you can do a banker's job as well as they can. Do that by creating sales opportunities though every person who goes to your window.

Bankers spend a lot of time trying to convince people to acquire loans, services, and new accounts through your bank. It's a sales job. The best banker I ever met, was cashiering for me one day at the bank. Every person who went up to her thought she she just a teller like everyone else, but like a true sales woman she engaged you into a conversation and made you consider bank services.

I go to that bank a lot; half of the time she is at her banker's desk and half the time she is at the teller window. However, she is the only person at the teller window who ever offers banking services.

If you can do what she did, I have no doubt your boss will give you a quick promotion.

You probably need more experience in finance and accounting for such a position. From what I've read, you may even need a business degree with one of those concentrations.

I don't think that your experience as a teller is the problem, because experience is great. It's probably your level of skill with the methods and whatnot used in the position. If you really would like to move up in banking, though, you would need your degree in something that would prepare you for the work, its not just about cash handling and can get very complex.

Good luck :)

Being a Teller and a Private Banker are two separate portfolios altogether. Teller is nothing more than handling cash transactions, i.e. deposits &/or withdrawals. Whereas as a Private Banker, one is likely to handle clients' assets that can be worth billions thus its a different ball game altogether. I like to believe the the basic qualification needed for a Private Banker is at least a degree of any discipline.
