Can I fill separated sidewalk pads with a flexible mortar?

It has gaps about 2"-3" between pads.They are filled with asphalt now. I would also like to know if I should stain the concrete afterward or just paint it. I'm trying to get the look of a solid sidewalk instead of alot of pads of concrete...

chop down the asphalt & squirt in the rubber sealer ( big caulk gun - home depot ) .... any cementisious product will probably crack & become loose..... tree roots???? the fix is jack them out & back fill with sand to create a cushion between concrete & root
