I wasn't going to get into this as I knew it would be a long thread, but since you asked here's the low down.
My main focus here will be Hinduism and not many other religions in India like (Jainism, Sikhism, Muslims, Christians).
In Hindusim, there is no one singular god like Christ for Christianity. Hindu religion has so many different Gods & Goddesses & each one has a purpose. Some of the most worshipped Gods are Ram, Hanuman, Krishna, (which come from the texts of Ramayan & Geeta. Krishna was a cow herder, hence Cows are sacred to Hindus). Then there's Ganesha (remover of obstacles & son of Shiva), Shankar (Shiva who has the third eye when opened would destroy the world), Brahma (the creator), Vishnu, Saraswati (goddess of knowledge), Lakshmi (Goddess of Prosperity), Kali ma, Durga ma, (Ma meaning Mother) Amba, Sai baba (a saint), Tirupathi Balaji.
I could name a lot more. It depends on what region of India you are from and what sub caste are you from. But mind you that this is idol worship. The 1st step. Then the crux or core of Hinduism are the texts the Upanishads / The Vedas (one of the most ancient texts known to mankind) which lay down the guidelines for Hindus to live (e.g. Karma, Dharma & the ultimate goal should be to achieve self- realisation / moskha / nirvana. etc)
Gautama Buddha was a prince who attained nirvana under a tree. He understood this core of Hinduism very well and created Buddhism.
These texts deal more with spirituality than religion, It is about recognizing the fact that God is in YOU and in everyone and in everything. Then there will be mutual respect all around. If only people started realizing this there wouldn’t be so much hate in this world. If only they realized that no one religion is greater than the other.
They are just a means to a higher goal, that is love & compassion towards everyone & everything around. For me that is more important than who you worship.
Phew..that’s a lot of writing. Darn it!! I better win Best Answer for this thread.

I call the gods of India "Rock Gods". They are all carved out of stone. There is no living God in India. An American living in India off and on for 33 years. Yoga is a lifestyle for me ... so I know the difference between the 'living and the dead'.

We Indians follow Hindu religion and worship the Titans depicted in our vedas (hindu religious documents) and epics (Mahabharata and Ramayana). They are dated back to millions of years, almost the start of civilization. Still many of the stories remain as myths and lots are left undocumented.
The Ramayana bridge (Adam bridge according to NASA) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Ramayanbdg.jpg), which is believed to be constructed by Rama's army still exist under sea between India and SriLanka.

Indian GOD is also same as the GOD of any other country.
If you understand what a true religion is then you would not have asked a question like this.
Please do not mix up religion and local cultural tradition.

India is a secular country.people here follow many religions.that means they follow hinduism, christanity, islam,
jainism,sikhism.. etc.they all are gods of india
the perception of god is an individual thought.
i think u might be interested in the cultural history pertaining to each religion that differentiates its method of worship.
