Update: Then I guess it depends on your definition of "sex appeal." Personally, I don't think Anna Nicole was sexy; however, there are millions of men out there who would beg to differ with me. She was a Playmate in her 20s and she was an adult film "actress." She was the face of Guess jeans for several years. Her whole celebrity was based on her sex appeal. After her tremendous weight-loss in recent years, she had regained some of that "Marilyn Monroe" mystique and became something of a latter-day sex symbol. But she couldn't act worth beans.

Anyway, if you don't like this example then think of Keanu Reeves. He's HOT! Very sexy in a mysterious sort of way. But the boy simply cannot act. He's the most wooden "actor" (and I use the term loosely) I've ever seen in a movie. Yet he has tremendous appeal. Why? You can't help but watch him. It's because he's sexy.

Great acting has nothing to do with sex appeal. Think of such actors as Kathy Bates, Steve Buscemi, Morgan Freeman, Glenn Close, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, Gene Hackman, etc. etc. I could go on. The point being that all of these actors/actresses (while I'm sure are sexy to *someone* in their lives), are not typically thought of in the same vein as younger, hotter actors such as Orlando Bloom. Orlando's looks will only get him so far. The fact that he can actually act is another matter.

Don't confuse celebrity with acting. Someone can be a celebrity and very popular simply because they've got tremendous sex appeal (think Anna Nicole Smith). But that certainly doesn't mean they can act (again, think Anna Nicole Smith).

To be honest, I think huge sex appeal can actually be a detriment to someone's acting career. Actors want plum roles. If an actor is constantly being offered sexy hunky roles with very little depth to the characters, they're going to be very frustrated artists. I think that's why Brad Pitt started turning down stereotypical beefcake roles; he wanted to play *characters* with complicated layers to their personalities. I remember reading an interview with him once where he said something to the effect that he was tired of being considered a sex symbol because he wanted to be taken seriously as an actor. Thank goodness he can actually act!

Anyway, in the end sex appeal doesn't equal good acting. And to answer your question, it's not hard to act. However, it IS hard to act well. Big difference. As far as Tom Cruise goes, hmmm...I think it'd be pretty arrogant of me to say I can act better than he can. He's very good at what he does which is young, cocky, larger-than-life maverick-type action heroes (think about all the movies he's made...pretty much the same guy, different jobs). I can't do what he does; it'd be a joke for me to even try. But then he probably couldn't convince a live audience that he's of British nobility, or a schizophrenic in a mental institution, or show the depth of emotion required to portray convincingly someone with a terminal illness and truly affect people on an emotional and spiritual level.

Now if you had said Ben Affleck...well... lol ; )

I've done dozens of plays and I've found that acting is emotionally and physically exhausting. Preparing lines, developing a character, performing under hot lights, reacting to my fellow actors -- it leaves me drained, delusional, tired, and mad. And I love every minute of it. Acting is like the greatest drug and the most passionate love affair rolled into one for the duration of the project. It is definitely not for flakes or the faint of heart.

One of my theater instructors believes that any actor, if they are doing their job can make every member of the audience want to jump their bones regardless of their appearance.

I think either you have a knack or you don't. From there you can learn techniques to make yourself professional. I think most big stars are mediocre but look good doing it. I think all of them are way overpaid.
