1991 - 5.0 - 115,000 miles - good compression - sounds strange when turning over - hard to start - idles rough - have taken timing cover off but looks as though marks are close to being right but there is a lot of play in chain and they dont line up exact. Is there some tolerence? Or as long as they havent actually jumped, this isnt the problem? Thanks!

if you are looking at the chain and gears, and there is alot of play, now is a good time to renew them. the set is not so expensive, and the cover didnt just pop off with a wing nut. if the cam gear is plastic, absolutely change it. the play in the chain would not be enough to change the sound of it cranking. look somewhere else for that. if it still idles rough with a new chain, and it has a good tune and ign. timing, look for a vacuum leak; cracked hoses, stuck egr valve, pcv guts missing, brake booster hissing.....good luck.

hi, if the chain is loose like that, for sure the sprackets and tensioner are worn and hear some noise in that area. check the condition of the gears the chain paths , if the gears are pointed not square on top, they are worn . all this will cause the timming to vary. thus idles rough and other things. take a look at the timming with the timming light and for sure it is jumping all over the place thus confirming you need to replace all those parts. or you can wait a little more longer, advance distributor 3 deg to solve hard start. have a great week.

Your timing gear would probably fail before the chain broke. It isn't likely to jump. I'd look for noise in the starter and would make sure everything in the distributer... and plugs are adjusted to exact specs. A car will run good at that mileage if everything is kept up as required but parts do wear out and need replacement. It might be time to have a certified mechanic hook up his analyzer to determine what needs doing.

You probably need a new timing chain. They tend to stretch over time and with that kind of mileage I would bet it needs one. 1-2 degrees can really make a huge difference in how the motor starts, runs and consumes fuel.
The other thing I would check is the distributor. If it is cracked or worn it can also cause some of the same symptoms.

I feel you've got analyzed those autos with whole accuracy. You've performed your homework. The Grand Marquis is likely one of the so much safe autos that is been made. It rather is dependent upon that is extra principal to you, however you'll be able to continuously pimp out the Grand Marquis. How? Check out the Marauder for a few concept.

<>If there is "a lot of play in chain" as you describe, and if that chain hasn't been changed before, I would strongly suggest doing it now. It will only stretch so far before breaking and then you have a worse problem. Yes, it is probably "jumping time" because of the stretch and wear.
