It's along the lines of "know your audience." If you know what will bring forth the reaction youre looking for from people, use that to your advantage. For instance, to bring happiness to most audiences, you can show small, fluffy animals.

An example of "know your audience" would be to understand that your mother doesn't like vulgarity and so you should not perform that rap song that has a swear word a few times per line.
Or that some people appreciate flattery, while others would be prone to violence.
Or if you wanted me to be happy, you would tell me that you will give me chocolate.

It is very important to know something about an audience before you start speaking to them. Be very careful about offering advice, because some people in your audience may not necessarily agree with your point of view. It is not wise to discuss abortion to a group of pro-lifers, for example.
If you use a lot of big words when you are talking to children, they will not understand or appreciate what you are trying to tell them.
A medical person or a lawyer is not going to be able to be able to communicate with a general audience if they use lots of medical or legal terms.
If the audience is adult, talk to them and not down to them. Don't try to prove that you are smarter than them.
Tread carefully and test a topic before going into detail. You might begin by asking a simple question e.g. "How many of you are in favor of the death penalty?" before you give a talk on why the death penalty is necessary in society.
A sympathetic audience will listen much better than an unsympathetic one.

Hope this helps.
